Watford Area Humanists Promoting Humanism in South West Hertfordshire
  • Beyond Belief – Recovering from cults, brainwashing and mystical thinking

At the November 7th monthly meeting – held on the first Saturday of each month at 11.00 a.m. at Reason Coffee Shop & Bookstore, 116 The Parade, Watford, WD17 1BD  – we will discuss the possibility of establishing a self-help group for those seeking like-minded people wanting to recover from religious beliefs and other irrational thinking. We will also hear from recovering religionists and arrange for a course on humanism to be held from January 2016.

One Response to “Beyond Belief – Recovering from cults, brainwashing and mystical thinking”

  1. A well-attended meeting which Neal Emery (Reason) and Mark Torrender agreed to establish a self-help group for those recovering from religion.
Also agreed to invite Mike Lawrence to speak at a public evening meeting on Tuesday 12th January 2016 on the topic of “Did Jesus Actually Exist?”
Watford Area Humanists will start a 6-week “Humanism – A Short Course” training course starting on the evening of Wednesday 6th January 2016.
Issues of contemporary significance were discussed, in which the writings of philosophers and scientists such as Bertrand Russell, Richard Dawkins, John Stuart Mill, Thomas Hobbes, Jeremy Bentham, Hannah Arendt (“Origins of Totalitarianism”) and a number of others were cited.
The discussions – apparently – continued well after the formal meeting had ended. We may have started something unusually cerebral in Watford!
